What happens to your computing accounts when you graduate, transfer, study abroad, or leave IU

Account disables
If you are a student at Indiana University, your computing accounts will remain active as long as you are enrolled at any IU campus. When you graduate from or leave IU, your student computing accounts are disabled. This occurs at the end of two consecutive terms during which you were not enrolled through the IU registrar. You will then be unable to access your account, although UITS temporarily retains its associated files, including email messages. If you do not register for classes the following semester, your computing accounts and all associated files will be deleted.
Note: Your Imail or Umail account will not be removed, and you can keep it after graduation. See Email and alumni accounts below.
If your accounts have been disabled but not yet deleted, re-enrolling will cause your accounts to be re-enabled once the registrar term-activates you. Registrar data is processed continuously during SIS online hours; see The Student Center in OneStart. The data then proceeds to the Account Management Service (AMS). Once AMS receives confirmation that you are active and eligible for accounts, your accounts will be re-enabled automatically.

Temporary extensions
As a student, you may make special arrangements to temporarily extend your computing privileges upon leaving IU. There is no charge for account extensions, but they are granted only when the accounts are necessary to complete or continue work with IU.
To keep your account open, you must have an IU faculty or appointed staff sponsor fill out an Affiliate form, as required by UITS Accounts Administration. You are responsible for contacting sponsors who can request an account extension for you.

Your Cyrus (Webmail) email account will be disabled when you graduate. Before graduation, you will receive an email message with instructions for creating an Imail or Umail account as an option for maintaining your IU address.
Note: After you receive this email, your Webmail account will be accessible in read-only mode for five days before being deactivated. This read-only period is not extended by creating an Imail or Umail account.
Your Imail and Umail accounts are not disabled when you leave IU, and
you can continue to use them after you graduate. Your return address
will remain username@imail.iu.edu or
username@umail.iu.edu.
Note: Your campus address (e.g.,
username@indiana.edu) will remain active only
if your preferred address is set to your Imail, Umail, or alumni email
account (see below). Forwards to other preferred addresses will result
in the deactivation of your campus address. See Registering your preferred address
Alumni accounts and services
The IU Alumni Association
(IUAA) offers free, lifelong email accounts to all IU alumni. Alumni
and students graduating within one semester will be able to select an
email address at username@alumni.iu.edu, or
one of several campus variants. These accounts are part of IU
Connect, a suite of services including email, instant
messaging, blogs, and classified ads.
Additionally, as an alumnus you can keep your IU Network ID for life if you are registered with the IUAA. After you graduate, your Network ID will provide access to special deals for IU alumni and to resources from the IUAA.

Transferring to another IU campus
If you have been a student at one IU campus and transfer to another one:
- You will be able to use your existing ADS account to
log into IU Student Technology Center (STC) computers.
- Your Network ID will allow you to log into
OneStart, Oncourse, and Oncourse
CL, and other campus web sites.
- You can continue to use your existing email account to send and
receive mail. To get an
@indiana.eduemail address (for new IUB students), or an@iupui.eduor other campus email address:
- Make sure that you appear in the Account Management Service (AMS) as a student on the new campus. This should happen one business day after you have registered; you can verify it by checking the AMS at: https://itaccounts.iu.edu/
- Follow the directions in If I'm moving to a different IU campus, how can I create a new email address?
- New IUB students will need to create a printing
account to print in the IUB STCs and RTCs. To do
this, send a printing account request to
stcprint@indiana.edu, visit a UITS Support Center walk-in location, or contact the UITS Support Center in Bloomington at 812-855-6789.
Abroad or off-campus study
IU students who arrange to study abroad through the Office of Overseas Study do not need to do anything to maintain their IU computing accounts.
If you have arranged to study abroad or off-campus for more than two consecutive semesters, a full-time faculty or staff sponsor must complete the affiliate form using the Account Management Service (AMS); see Sponsored computing accounts for IU affiliates.
