Get Connected to IU's network from campus housing

The Get Connected software automatically secures, patches, and configures your computer so it can connect to the Indiana University network from IU Bloomington or IUPUI campus housing, and in so doing helps protect IU network resources from hackers, viruses, and worms.

Note: Before moving into your campus residence, you can run Get Connected in off-campus mode; getting connected to the IU network will be faster once you move in. To run Get Connected, visit:

Operating system information

Windows

The Get Connected software works only with Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP (Pro or Home version). Computers running Windows 2000 or Linux, as well as game consoles, must be manually registered; for help, contact the UITS Support Center. You cannot register earlier versions of Windows on the IU network in campus housing.

If you are running Windows Vista, your computer must have all Service Packs up to and including Service Pack 2 in order to run Get Connected and thus make a cabled connection to IU's network.

Mac

If you have a Mac running Mac OS X 10.3 or later, instead of using Get Connected, visit the network registration site:

Using Get Connected

  1. Log in with administrative rights.

Note: At Indiana University, the University Information Security Office (UISO) recommends that you normally refrain from running your Windows computer as an administrator. For more, see What is the principle of least privilege?

  2. Your computer will automatically direct to the Get Connected site the first time you connect to an IUB or IUPUI campus housing data jack and open a browser; if it doesn't, go to: http://getconnected.iu.edu/
  3. Click Click here to Connect to the Network to obtain the software. Select run if prompted by your browser. You can also run the software by clicking the Install Get Connected or GCinstaller.exe icons the download process places on your desktop.

  4. Once you launch the software, follow the prompts on each screen until you reach the option to register your computer on the network.

Detailed instructions with screenshots are available at Get Connected for Windows.
