How to connect your computer to the Internet at IU

On-campus connections

Ethernet in campus housing (IUB and IUPUI)

To connect to the Internet via Ethernet in campus housing, you will need a Network ID. Your computer must have an Ethernet card (also called a network interface card, or NIC), and you must have an Ethernet cable. The Get Connected utility will help you configure your Windows computer for connecting to the IU network. IUPUI: In the Campus Apartments on the Riverwalk, you may use a commercial Ethernet cable. At IUPUI Ball Residence Hall, you must use a proprietary Ethernet cable that you can purchase from the IUPUI Housing Office, 405 Porto Allegre Street, Suite 170, Monday-Friday 8am-5pm.
Indiana University Bloomington: If you live in non-Greek campus housing, you will find an Ethernet cable attached to the wall data jack. IUB Greek housing residents may purchase an IU proprietary Ethernet cable; see Getting an Ethernet cable if you live in an IUB Greek house or other IU-affiliated building

Ethernet in campus offices

To set up a computer in your office on campus, contact your department's local support provider (LSP). The data jack needs to be activated and an IP address assigned. If you aren't sure who your department's LSP is, contact the Support Center on your campus.

Wireless on campus

If your computer has a wireless network card, you can make a wireless connection to the IU network at many locations on the IU campuses. At IUB and IUPUI, the IU Secure wireless network provides secure access without the use of VPN; see About IU Secure. At regional campuses, a VPN connection is required to use the wireless network.

At Indiana University Bloomington and IUPUI, University Information Technology Services (UITS) is in the process of extending the new IU Secure wireless network beyond the common areas and into every student room of the residence halls. If IU Secure is not yet available in your IUB residence hall, you may operate a properly configured wireless access point (WAP) as an exception to the IT-19 Extending the University Data Network and IT-20 Wireless Networking policies from the University Information Policy Office (UIPO). Once IU Secure is available in your residence hall, this exception will no longer apply, and you will have to remove your WAP from the network.
