Primary UITS contact: Matthew Gunkel

Completed: December 19, 2014

Description: Nearly two years ago, the IU Online initiative kicked off, and along with that, the creation of Online Instructional Design and Development (OIDD) - now called eLearning Design and Services (eDS). Over the past two years, eDS has worked to meet the demand for assistance in creating new credit-based program offerings across IU. This work has entailed an engagement with all campuses and nearly every school. eDS was formed to provide expertise in online instructional design and development, as well as information and support for cutting-edge and emerging technologies for digital education.

As students evolve, so do the systems and tools that shape the way we engage, educate, and inspire them. Early on, eDS determined that there were common gaps as faculty worked to translate face-to-face content and material into the digital realm. In order to support and drive this effort, eDS has engaged with Next.IU, campus partners, and Unizin to continue to deliver solutions that work to meet the demands of faculty and students in flipped, hybrid, and fully online experiences.

Outcome: The IU Online ramp-up delivered a fully operational unit with resources that can be leveraged to deliver the courses, programs, and certificates, as approved by the chief academic officers for each campus. Other achievements include:

  • Identified and hired talented human resources for instructional design and development
  • Identified and piloted new tools for IU Online
  • Engaged in partnerships that facilitate scale and provide just-in-time resources for development
  • Made recommendations to Next.IU for enterprise-wide testing and deployment
  • Developed strategies for sustainable course design and development
  • Developed internal procedures and workflows that facilitate transparency to all eDS partners, and worked to improve the development and design process
  • Built relationships with the centers for teaching and learning, the Libraries, and the Office of Online Education to support a common effort for the challenges of the design and development of IU Online projects.

Approximately 180 additional online courses are expected to launch over the current and following academic years. eDS expects to assist in the development of approximately 100 courses during any given year, an estimate based on all current priorities, plus new and anticipated requests for additional development, including joint regional programs, gateway proposals, and newly identified priority programs.
