Primary UITS contact: Pete Bucklin

Completed: January 25, 2013

See ARCHIVED: Client Virtualization Phase I (completed)

Team leads: Emily Adams, Mark Niswander

Primary clients: Faculty, staff, and students

Purpose: Client Virtualization seeks to extend lifecycle replacement and simplify desktop management, creating new opportunities for schools and departmental leadership and the use of their technology dollars. Delivering an enterprise service will demonstrate new efficiencies and cost savings through modernizing the computing model at Indiana University. This project aligns with Empowering People action items 22b and 29.

IUanyWare will permit members of the IU community to access, via a web browser, many IU-licensed applications that they once needed to install on their own machines. IUanyWare virtual applications are available on mobile devices as well as computers.

The IUanyWare service continues to extend the Client Virtualization model, which allows UITS to centralize and virtualize software delivery for students, faculty, and staff. IUanyWare better utilizes limited resources to deliver high-performance computing to remote users via their computer browsers, tablets, and smartphones.

Benefits:

  • Increased security, since there are fewer instances of the OS to patch and maintain
  • A more sustainable model of computing, since thin client computers last 6 years or more
  • Departmental cost savings, since the life of existing desktop and laptop computers can be extended
  • Thin client computers cost significantly less than a traditional desktop computer.
  • Ready access to applications with no service and support overhead of local application installations
  • Unified, centralized license model for applications delivered virtually

Phase II description: With the vendor selection process complete, Phase II will entail the development and implementation of a comprehensive service architecture. Upon completion of Phase II, we expect to present to the university community a stable and scalable production client virtualization service accessible to all faculty, staff, and students of Indiana University.
