Completed: September 2, 2011

Description: HPS is developing a reporting system to support various reporting requirements and ad-hoc managerial analysis, provide a historical perspective, and offer timely metrics. The system will be one component needed for decision making and evaluation of the service and value offered to IU researchers, students, and staff.

The project is phased, with this first phase being a prototype based on the TeraGrid annual report. Criteria for this phase are data accuracy, relevance to fixed reporting requirements, some limited capability for ad-hoc reporting, and the ability to leverage tools already within the HPS suite.

To leverage existing HPS technology, the reporting environment is an Oracle database with a web-based application built using Application Express.

To support data accuracy, system states (e.g., maintenance time, unplanned downtime, or a change in hardware configuration) will be stored in the database and factored into the appropriate calculations.

The granularity for the reporting in the first phase is monthly.

Milestones and status:

  • As of February 2010, the application is in unit testing.
  • Job data from 2006 to present for Big Red and Quarry has been loaded.
  • Past downtime estimates are being researched and will be entered into the reporting system.
  • Types of measurements have been decided, and appropriate algorithms have been developed and implemented.
  • Reports and ad-hoc analysis capabilities have been implemented and are being tested.
