Primary UITS contact: Stephanie Burks

Completed: December 14, 2007

Description: The Research Data Complex (RDC) is being migrated to a new platform. There are currently eight instances on two machines: five research-based instances on inquire.uits.indiana.edu and three GIS-related instances on raster.uits.indiana.edu. The two machines will be migrated to libra45.uits.iu.edu and libra46.uits.iu.edu respectively between June and October 2007. Each of the Oracle instances is being migrated separately, working closely with the researchers involved. The instances will be migrated in the following order: RSRCH, ALTTEN, INMAP, RAS, FIMS, BIOMAP, RESRCH, BIO10G. The order of the instances was determined by a number of factors including customer timing requirements and other customer needs. Overall planning for the migration was completed in late May. Migration of the first instance, RSRCH, began in mid-June. All migrations are expected to be completed by October.

The web front end, discover.uits.indiana.edu, is also being migrated to a new system, Discern. The migration from Solaris to Linux will provide more flexibility for new web applications and portals.

Outcome: The goal of this migration is to retire hardware that has reached the end of its lifecycle and to provide newer, faster, more reliable hardware for the RDC environment.
