Description: The Indiana University Digital Library Program, in collaboration with the Indiana University Lilly Library, the Indiana State Library, the Indiana State Museum, and the Indiana Historical Society, has received a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to create a single website to provide access to approximately 10,000 pieces of digitized sheet music from these collections. The site, IN Harmony: Sheet Music from Indiana, will feature Indiana-related sheet music, i.e., sheet music by Indiana composers, arrangers, lyricists, and publishers, as well as sheet music about the state.

Outcome and benefits: The results of this project include a catalog of at least 10,000 pieces of sheet music digitized and organized, an open source sheet music cataloging tool, and a publicly searchable database of sheet music, as well as enhanced access to the collections of the Lilly Library, the Indiana State Library, the Indiana State Museum, and the Indiana State Historical Society.

Milestones and status:

  • The project was completed December 31, 2008, when the final report was delivered to IMLS.
  • The Open Source Cataloging Tool is available on SourceForge.
  • The Online Search and Discovery system is now a production system of the DLP.
  • Production digitizing and cataloging of the Lilly Library's Starr sheet music collection is ongoing.
  • The DeVincent Sheet Music Collection has been imported into the IN Harmony database and became available April 2009.
