About IU's policy on official communications from the university to students

The university reserves the right to send official communications to students by email with the full expectation that students will receive and read these messages in a timely fashion. University email accounts are available to all students. Official university communications will be sent to your IU email address.

Students are expected to check their IU email accounts frequently and consistently to stay current with university-related communications. Students should also check Canvas for email messages related to their courses.

If you forward your university email to a private address (such as a personal Gmail account or a departmental email server), you do so at your own risk. The university is not responsible for any issues that may negatively impact timely access to university email that you forward to another address. Encountering such issues does not absolve you of your responsibility to know and comply with the content of official communications sent to your official IU email address. (You will not be held responsible for interruptions of service to your official university email account.) For help setting up, changing, or canceling email forwarding, see Forward your IU email to another address using Microsoft Outlook or Outlook on the web.
