About the STC printing allotment at IUB

Student Technology Centers (STC) Printing Services is dedicated to providing efficient and cost-effective printing services to students, faculty, and staff of Indiana University Bloomington. Black-and-white printing is funded through the Student Technology Fee, enabling more than 85% of students to print free of charge.

Those with exceptional printing needs pay four cents per page for their over-quota printing. Sheets of paper printed in duplex (on both sides) count as two pages. These charges will appear on the user's bursar account after the end of each semester.

You can verify your printing account is active and also check your current printing allotment at:

http://stcweb.stc.indiana.edu/print/

Standard printing allotments

All registered students and student organizations, as well as faculty, receive a standard printing allotment as follows:

Undergraduates: 650 pages per semester (rollover available)
Graduate students: 1,000 pages per semester (rollover available)
Student organizations: 400 pages per semester (with faculty sponsorship)
Faculty: 200 pages per semester (funded by Research Technologies)

Student organizations must be registered with the Student Activities Office and have a group username. To obtain an account, the faculty and staff sponsors of student organizations should go to the Account Management Service (AMS) and click Manage my computing accounts and then Request new group username. Find the AMS here:

https://itaccounts.iu.edu/

Once a student organization has a UITS account, the faculty sponsor can apply for the allotment by sending email to stcprint@indiana.edu.

Printing balances are tabulated immediately after finals every semester. Printing between semesters counts against the upcoming semester.

Supplemental printing allotments

If you are not a student and your printing needs are unpredictable, supplemental allotments provide pay-as-you-go flexibility. They are available to anyone with a valid IUB username.

Supplemental allotments are also ideal for departments that wish to compensate students and/or employees for their work-related printing.

Black and white: $4 per 100 pages (funded by individual or department)
Color printing: $1 increments (funded by individual or department)

Departments organizing conferences or workshops using the STCs or Residential Technology Centers and paying the Conference Technology Fee may also wish to provide supplemental printing allotments for their program participants. These arrangements should be made when the conference technology fee is paid. See Conference use of the Student Technology Centers for more information. You may also contact STC Conference Services at stcconf@indiana.edu for more information.

Note: Sponsors must keep records of all conference account users. In the case of a security or policy violation, the sponsor must be able to supply identity and contact information for the user of the offending account at the time of the incident, and must assist in problem resolution.

Departments wishing to arrange for a supplemental allotment for their students, faculty, or staff may contact stcprint@indiana.edu. To avoid delays, provide a departmental account number, the username of the individual, and the size of the supplement.

Individuals may purchase a supplemental allotment for themselves at the UITS Support Center in the IC. Supplemental allotments are available in $4 increments for B&W pages or $1 increments for Color printing. Unused balances will be carried over into upcoming semesters.

Frequently asked questions

What are the STC printing allotment start and end dates?

The current semester's allotment always expires at midnight on the Saturday after finals. The upcoming semester's allotment always begins on the Sunday after finals. You can see the specific date range for the current semester whenever you check your allotment. To see date ranges for future or past semesters, select the semester from the drop-down menu at:

http://stcweb.stc.indiana.edu/print/

Why does the semester allotment begin before classes start?

All departments of IUB recognize the official end of the semester as being immediately after the last day of finals. However, many departments give their students assignments before the official start of classes. Moving the start date would unnecessarily inconvenience those students in departments with unique class schedules.

What if the printer is broken and my output is damaged or lost?

Credit for damaged or unprinted output is available upon request. See a consultant as soon as possible after your loss. If a consultant is not on site, call 812-855-3802 for assistance.

How can I avoid printing over my allotment?

Most students print under 200 pages per semester. Here are some ways to reduce your dependence on printing, conserve paper, and avoid waste:

  • Avoid printing email. Save it to a file instead.

  • Avoid printing from the web. Store it offline or save it to a file.

  • Print only what you need to print.

  • Ask your professors to accept assignments electronically via Oncourse CL, CD, email, or FTP.

  • Edit draft copies online instead of on paper.

  • Keep your documents in Oncourse CL Resources. They are always as close as the nearest networked computer. For more information, see File storage in Oncourse CL.

  • Use Print Preview when formatting instead of printing draft copies. It saves time and effort.

  • Use duplex printing whenever possible. For more information, see Duplex printing in the IUB and IUPUI STCs (One duplex page still counts as two printed pages.)

See also Conserving paper in the STCs

What happens if I go over my allotment?

At the end of each semester, if you have exceeded your allotment, you will be assessed a modest over-quota printing fee for each page by which you exceeded your allotment. This charge represents the incremental cost of your excess printing and will be automatically added to your bursar account.

When does my printing account expire?

Your printing account at IUB does not expire unless you are no longer enrolled in classes; that is, it remains active just as your other accounts do.
