Making a VPN connection to the IU network on a Palm Tungsten

Note: You need to register your wireless device before you make a wireless VPN connection at Indiana University Bloomington and IUPUI. Registration enhances the security and reliability of IU's wireless network. To register your computer, see the instructions in At IU, how do I register my wireless Pocket PC, Windows Mobile, or Palm device with DHCP?

To connect to the Indiana University network with a wireless PDA such as a Palm Tungsten, first create a VPN connection:

  1. On the home screen, tap Wi-Fi Setup. Tap Next.

  2. On the Wi-Fi Setup screen, tap IU Wireless. Tap Next.

  3. Tap VPN Setup, and then tap Next.

  4. In the "Account" field, type the name of your campus. In the "User Name" field, type your Network ID username.

  5. If you want your device to ask you for a password each time it connects, leave the "Password" field empty. If you want it to remember your password, type it in. In the "VPN Server Name or Address" field, type your VPN server:

Use the table below to find your VPN server for both remote (e.g., cable modem, DSL, or outside Internet service provider) and wireless VPN connections:

    Campus VPN server

    IU Bloomington pptp.indiana.edu
    IU East vpn.iue.edu
    IU Kokomo vpn.iuk.edu
    IU Northwest 149.162.8.2
    IUPUI pptp.iupui.edu
    IU South Bend vpn.iusb.edu
    IU Southeast vpn.ius.edu

  6. Tap Done twice. On the home screen, tap the Prefs icon, and then tap VPN.

  7. Next to "VPN", tap the drop-down menu and select Enabled. Tap Done.

Whenever your Palm Tungsten needs a network connection, it will automatically connect.
