Troubleshooting problems with Caller ID telephones at IU

Following is a short list of common problems with Caller ID telephones at Indiana University. If you experience a problem that is not addressed here, or if the solution provided does not work, you can obtain additional help by sending email to commreq@iu.edu or by calling 812-856-2287 (IU Bloomington) or 317-274-9900 (IUPUI).

Problem Solution
The display is in an alternate language. You can change the display language through the Set Options features. See the Knowledge Base document Display language
The cursor does not move when saving in the directory. The number or name is too long. Numbers cannot be longer than 24 digits, and names cannot be longer than 16 characters.
You cannot save a directory number into a memory key. Once you are in the directory, the Save key functions only to add numbers to the directory, and not to memory keys.
Callers are not identified on the display. Let the telephone ring at least twice before answering. If that does not work, you may not have the feature added to your line.
The callers' list is empty. Until you subscribe to the Caller ID feature, your telephone does not record incoming calls.
There is no information on the display and the ringer volume is low. Make sure the power adapter is plugged in to a working electrical outlet.
The display works but you cannot hear a dial tone. Your telephone lines may be wired differently at the jack. If this occurs, call 812-855-2111 for more information.
When you answer your two-line phone, you hear only a dial tone (relevant only at IUB). The call came in on your non-prime line; press the line with the flashing light.
The telephone wobbles. Check to see that the telephone cable is inserted properly in the channel on the back of the telephone.
You cannot program a memory key. Some of the memory keys may be factory programmed. These keys are locked and cannot be erased or reprogrammed.
Call waiting identification (Caller ID) information is not being displayed. Make sure that the call waiting identification information option is enabled, and that you have the feature added to your line.
You are unable to call back from the callers' list. The callers' list will record the area code of any call, including local calls. You need to take the area code out of any local calls when dialing numbers from the callers' list.
You can view regular Caller ID information, but you can't see who is calling on the Call Waiting. Ensure that the call waiting identification option is on, and that you have the call waiting feature on your line. Also note that you will not receive call waiting identification when an extension is in use.
The speakerphone is not working on your two-line telephone (relevant only at IUB). If the speakerphone is not working, the option for the headset may be enabled. To fix this problem, go to option 1 in the setup list and turn the option off.
You have only one line connected to your two-line telephone, and you keep getting the message "check the phone cord" (relevant only at IUB). You may disable this prompt via option 9 under the setup list. Also check that the line cord is connected to a jack.
