On this page:

Windows 8.x and 7

To configure your computer to dial into the IUB or IUPUI modem pool:

  1. In the lower right, near the clock, click the networking icon (it looks like a monitor with a phone/network cable on its left side).
  2. Click Open Network and Sharing Center.
  3. Click Set up a new connection or network.
  4. In Windows 8.x, click Connect to a workplace, and then Dial Directly.

In Windows 7, click Set up a dial-up connection.

  5. Fill in the required information:
    1. Type the phone number (at IUB, 856-5200; at IUPUI, 278-5620).
    2. Type your IU username and passphrase, and then give the connection a name.
    3. There may be other options; these are generally personal choices that don't affect the dial-up connection.

  6. Click Connect. If the connection fails, you can choose Set up the connection anyway, which will save it for later use.

Note: The option to save the connection is available only when you try to connect.

  7. On the next screen, click Close.
  8. Click the networking icon (near the clock); the new connection will now be ready for use.

Windows Vista

To configure your computer to dial into the IUB or IUPUI modem pool:

  1. From the Start menu, select Connect To.
  2. Near the bottom of the Network Connections window, select Set up a connection or network.
  3. Choose Set up a dial-up connection, and then click Next.
  4. Fill in the required information:
    1. Type the phone number (at IUB, 856-5200; at IUPUI, 278-5620).
    2. Type your IU username and password, and then give the connection a name.

  5. Click Connect. If your computer is not plugged into a phone jack, the connection will fail, but you can click Set up the connection anyway to save the connection for future use.

To access the dial-up connection:

  1. Click the Start menu, and then select Connect To.
  2. Select your dial-up connection from the list, and then click Connect.
  3. To add an alternate number, right-click the dial-up connection from the list, and then choose Properties. Click Alternates, and then add the correct phone number (at IUB, 856-5202). Click OK.
  4. In the Alternate Phone Numbers window, make sure the box next to If number fails, try next number is checked. Because the alternate line has fewer modems, leave Move successful numbers to top of list unchecked. Click OK.
