About IUCAT

Overview

IUCAT does not include individual journal articles. You can search for the title of a journal to find the availability of print copies or a link to an electronic copy, if available. To find journal articles related to a specific topic, use one of the subject-specific library databases listed on your library's website.

Search improvements

IUCAT includes a number of search improvements over the previous version:

• Campus-specific views focus on materials on a single campus.
• Results are listed in relevance-ranked order. The best matches appear first.
• Facets on the left side of the screen make it easier to limit a large search result set to find what you need. Limit search results by format, author, publication year, language, campus, library, and more. You can also limit your search to material available online.
• You do not need to use a truncation symbol to get variant forms of a term in your results. Words are automatically "stemmed" to allow you to easily find these variations. For example, a search for kneel will return results including kneels and kneeling as well.
• Advanced search screens allow you to focus and narrow a search more precisely.
• Share a resource with others by copying and pasting the URL from IUCAT into publications, email messages, and other documents.
• Click a resource's title to see its description, and browse the call numbers of similar titles in IU libraries statewide.

Reasons to use IUCAT

Use IUCAT to:

• Find a known title. Relevance ranking places the best matches first.
• Search for electronic books, journals, and other resources, logging in only when necessary.
• Limit a search to only online resources.
• Easily focus a search using facets to limit the results.
• Use the citation feature for help citing a work you find in the catalog.
• Search by call number on the Advanced Search screen. Find a useful resource and browse nearby call numbers across campuses and libraries.
• Search for materials in specific collections (for example, Variations, Philanthropic Studies).
• Search for materials housed in specific locations within a library.
• Browse subject headings to locate materials on a particular topic.
• Log into My Account to see a list of items you have checked out, and renew any of those items.
• Request items be sent to you from other libraries/campuses.
• Request delivery of resources from the Auxiliary Library Facility (ALF).
